CHARLOTTE PASS

OCTOBER LONG WEEKEND CARNIVAL

Until 1992 there were annual races conducted over the October Long Weekend at Charlotte Pass.  KAC and Southern Alps Ski Club (SASC) were the prime organizers for the October Long Weekend races in conjunction with Charlotte Pass Ski School.  These races were instigated by the Kosciusko Alpine Club when it presented the Charlotte Pass Cup in 1965.  The best three times in each team are counted and the team scoring the lowest total wins.

The Chalet Trophy was presented in 1968 by the Chalet Management for competition by women’s teams from resident Clubs.  These races are conducted over the same courses and conditions as those used for the Charlottes’ Pass Cup.

The Charlotte Pass Nordic Cup was presented in 1969 by the Southern Alps Ski Club for teams of four from each Club (best three times to count) for a langlauf race over approximately 5km.

The Spastic Centre Cup was present by Sverre Kaaten in 1969 to teams of three in women’s langlauf competition (best two times to count).

The carnival consisted of a slalom race, a jump and a cross country race with the emphasis on team outcomes rather than individual performance. Men’s and women’s competitions were involved with two (2) divisions (A and B) being keenly contested.

The event had been contested between all Clubs in the resort, as well as guests at the Chalet and staff members competing for Cell Block.

After a series of October Long Weekends with poor snow cover, the October long weekend Carnival fell into abeyance after being last run in 1992.  The decision of Charlotte Pass Village management to cease trading before the October Long Weekend subsequently prevented the revival of this important carnival.

PERISHER CUP

Since the early 1950’s the ski clubs in Perisher Valley have organized and run the Perisher Cup over the October Long Weekend.  This is also a team event based around a slalom race, a jump and a cross country relay.  At the present time, this event is organized primarily by the Cooma Ski Club and is extremely well support by most Perisher based clubs.  It is also strongly supported by the Perisher Blue Race Department.

Club teams of four (4) competitors, plus one official per team are required. Events are:

Cross Country 4x2km Relay - all times to count.

Giant Slalom - best three (3)times to count.

Jump - best three (3) jumps (by three (3) different competitors to count)

KAC has participated intermittently in the Perisher Cup.

THREDBO INTER CLUB CARNIVAL

KAC has commenced participation in recent years in the Thredbo Inter Club Carnival which is held on a Saturday in mid August each year.  This is a teams based event centering on one Alpine race conducted over two runs.  As handicap conditions apply in this event, KAC has traditionally selected teams to take the best advantage of handicap conditions.  As with the Perisher Cup, the Thredbo Inter Club is a fairly unique event in that it allows the average club skier to participate on the same course as Olympic skiers and national team members as well as people of their own standards.

Each club has a minimum team based on the number of Club Members. The team is selected by the Club Captain. Trophies are awarded for:

Fastest minimum team.

Fastest minimum team on handicap.

Fastest team of 5.

Fastest team of 5 on handicap.

There are also 5 individual awards for men and women.

Best Club Overall categories.

KAC has provided the trophy for the fastest minimum team on handicap.

CHARLOTTE PASS RACE WEEK

The Charlotte Pass Ski Associate (CPSA), which comprises the fifteen (15) clubs at Charlotte Pass, has run a week of racing at Charlotte Pass called “Race Week” or (Charlotte Pass Interclub Race Week) for many years. The original Race Week started out as a friendly contest between KAC and SASC in 1970 under the guidance of Geoff Nott (KAC) and Rex Cox (SASC).  With the building of other clubs at Charlotte Pass, however, the CPSA came into existence and assumed responsibility for the Carnival.  In recent years the management at Charlotte Pass Village have withdrawn from active support of the Carnival due to insurance issues and the perceived impact the Carnival was having upon guests at The Chalet.

Until 2001 the Race Week Carnival ran in conjunction with Cross Country Week in Perisher Valley: The KAC and the Charlotte Pass Open providing a connection between the two Carnivals.  In 2002 Charlotte Pass Village informed CPSA that they would no longer allow Race Week to be conducted at the same time as Cross Country Week in Perisher.  Accordingly, from 2002, Race Week has been held a week earlier than Cross Country Week in Perisher.

The Club remained committed to the continuation of club racing at Charlotte Pass notwithstanding the move of the Open Club Championship to Perisher Blue in 2005 and 2006.  With the move of KAC and SASC’s Club Championships to Thredbo in 2007 the future of Race Week is uncertain, at best.  As KAC and SASC are the driving forces behind the CPSA, it is unlikely that the other clubs at Charlotte Pass will have the numbers or the capacity to continue Race Week.
